"Alpha, I am afraid the rouges are after us," Kavin said.
"I guess so too. I mind-linked a few betas and asked them to strengthen the security in the packhouse. But my hunch is, I think they know only a few of my pack members are here, so they can easily attack us. We have to keep our eyes open." I said.
"But I don't think this will worry us. I mean, this pack's alpha will take care of shit, right?"
"He's more like the betraying type for me," I answered. "If he gets to know the rouges are after us, might as well help them."
"I don't see it that way. I have been with him in many meetings, and you are the only one who finds him suspicious." Kavin argued.
"I don't find him suspicious but betraying. I don't know. He looks so pretentious. So we better not keep our guard down. Inform everyone here about it."
"Yes, alpha. I will also go through this pack's connections." Kavin replied.
We heard some footsteps arrive and stopped our conversation midway. We were standing behind the packhouse, away from the Blue Crystal Pack members, to talk about the matter with rouges. That was when the girl from the woods, Everleigh, emerged from the direction of the training grounds.
She had her tied back to a ponytail, her arms securely wrapped around a little girl who looked around six. Both had smiles playing on their lips as the little girl talked about something to Every, who only nodded as a response as always.
"Oh, it's the cleaning one," Kavin muttered next to me.
"Cleaning one?" I asked, squinting my eyes at him.
"Today, she cleaned my room." Kavin nonchalantly replied.
'Oh, she was on duty then.' Blue said with a teasing voice. When I didn't reply, he continued his teasing. 'And someone thought she came to see him with a dumb excuse~.'
'And you didn't?' I annoyingly asked back.
Kavin and I watched as the two slowly walked past us. Every slowly glanced in my direction but quickly walked inside without a smile or waving as usual.
"I scared her... I guess," I mumbled under my breath.
"When? What? And how?" Kavin bombarded me with questions.
"Nothing." I quickly said, not wanting to talk about it more.
Thinking about the incident which happened in the morning, well, it was fair for me to be mad at her. But she was doing her cleaning duty, and I thought she came in with a false excuse...
Who was I sugarcoating again?
"Wait here, I've got to do something," I said to my beta and sped walked to the direction Every disappeared to. It was my first time going there because all I saw were the entrance area and some hallways. I heard Kavin's voice asking me where I was going, but too late, I was far from him.
When I went in, I met with the kitchen and some stairways. I could remember hearing how omegas had their rooms in the basement, so I slowly walked downstairs, assuming she went there. I didn't see anyone around as I went downstairs.
The more steps I took, the darker it got. The stairways didn't have any lights on, but I could see dim lights ahead of me. So it helped me to see where I stepped. When I finally came to the basement grounds, I met with an eerie silent place. The basement looked really different from the gold-coated areas I saw first.
The surroundings had different pheromones of omegas mixed there. It nearly made me gag because of the thick sweetness, which I didn't like. I was never a fan of any scents other than my own. So I scrunched my nose as I walked towards the only bright light ahead of me.
I met with a prominent room with around ten beds when I went in. I raised my eyebrows, not knowing what the place was. There wasn't anyone inside.
A shattering sound from behind got me back to my senses. When I turned around, I saw Everleigh standing while looking at me as if she saw a ghost, and there was a shattered glass at her feet.
I followed her only to have our usual conversation and break the awkward and uncomfortable feeling between us. But seeing her in front of me with wide eyes and a scared look, I lost all the words I had collected in my mind. She looked pale all of a sudden.
"Why did you-" my words got cut off when she pointed in the direction I came from. I raised my eyebrows in confusion.
She kept on pointing that way with a worried look on her face. Her small hands grabbed me from my upper arm when I didn't move and softly pulled me in the same direction. She took me out of the room, but I didn't let her pull me anymore.
"You want me to leave?" I asked, stopping in my tracks.
She nodded without any hesitation.
"I know you are mad at me. Even I am mad at you for barging in without telling me before. But I don't want that small thing to become-" my words again got cut short when she pressed a finger on my lips, silencing me.
And her hand felt soft, gazing at my cheeks. It pressed, not letting my lips say another word. I knew if I tried to talk, I would be able to. But my eyes decided to bore into her panicked face without saying another word.
We heard some footsteps. I saw her panicked look and how scared she looked. She looked at me and shook her head, pointing at me. And that was when I got what she wanted to say. I shouldn't be there in the place where omegas lived. Maybe it would bring her nothing but more trouble.
And adding more hay to the fire. Someone was coming down the stairs to the basement.
I quickly collected the emitted pheromones around me. Every opened the door behind me and pushed me inside. I looked around the room to see some washing machines inside, and it smelled like soap and freshness in the room. It was the laundry room.
Every closed the door slightly just when I felt another person's presence outside the room where I was before.
"Where's the new kid?" I heard a male, unfamiliar voice ask, and the person didn't emit any pheromones, so I assumed it was a beta.
And there was silence for a while. The person's presence didn't leave, and I felt another presence come in. I wanted to know what was going on, so I peeked through the small gap between the door and the wall.
"Look at her, careless as always." I heard the new voice say in a taunting way. I furrowed my eyebrows, watching them through the gap. I saw Every's small frame look down, and she quickly bent down to put the broken glasses aside so the two guys could walk.
But the guy who had his hair tied behind pulled her by grabbing her shoulder and pushing her to the laundry room door where I was leaning on. I felt the door budge at the extreme force.
What I saw through the door looked unfamiliar to me.
From the gap, I saw the guy raising his hand. The next thing I heard was a slapping sound and an almost inaudible whimper. My hands fisted into balls, and my nails dug into the wooden door in anger. They were bullying her, and bullying was one thing I could never stand, especially when it was happening to someone I knew.
When I was around ten, I could remember once my father broke the pack bond of a few betas who tried to bully another one. That was how I became an anti-bully as well.
I saw Every fall to the floor while leaning on the door. I could only see her back as she leaned on the same door I was peeking through.
"Such a weakling, no wonder you live in dirt." the guy who hit her said.
The other guy chuckled; "Imagine living in another pack where these weaklings live with everyone?"
"Sick."
"Sick." both repeated.
"Why don't you try to touch the broken glasses now, hmm?" the guy who hit her asked in a menacing voice.
I slowly kept my fisted hand on the door. All I heard were inaudible gasps and small winces for the next few minutes as that guy pressed Every's hand on the broken glasses.
I wished I could go out and punch the hell out of the two guys, but I couldn't. If I went out, it wouldn't have done anything good. Maybe it, worsen the situation more.
When footsteps faded away, there was a moment of silence. And small sobs came from outside the door, which I only heard as deep breaths.
"Hold up there, will you?" I whispered from inside the room.
